Pennsylvania’s new tourism brand, “The Great American Getaway,” launched by Governor Shapiro in May, shines a spotlight on the Alleghenies region, positioning it as a prime destination for travelers seeking the perfect blend of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and rich history. The campaign highlights the diverse attractions and unique experiences that make the Alleghenies a standout location for visitors seeking family fun, year-round outdoor recreation, cultural experiences that rival big cities, and much more.
Nestled in the heart of Pennsylvania, the Alleghenies region is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, from rolling hills and dense forests to serene lakes and clear, winding rivers and streams. This natural beauty is at the forefront of “The Great American Getaway,” inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the great outdoors. Popular spots like Blue Knob State Park and Raystown Lake offer countless activities such as hiking, mountain biking, boating, and fishing, catering to both thrill-seekers and those looking for a peaceful retreat.
For example, the Allegrippis Trail, is a renowned network of mountain biking trails at Raystown lake, spanning over 30 miles around the 8,300-acre lake. The well-maintained single-track paths cater to all skill levels, offering exhilarating rides through forests and scenic vistas. The trail is a must-stop for mountain bikers. Paired with opportunities for boating, swimming and camping, Raystown is a vacation destination of its own.

The Alleghenies are also steeped in history, with numerous sites that tell the story of America’s past. The campaign highlights historical landmarks like the Horseshoe Curve, a National Historic Landmark that played a crucial role in the nation’s railroad history. The Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum further enriches this narrative, providing insights into the lives of workers who built and operated these essential transportation routes.
In addition to its natural and historical appeal, the Alleghenies offer a vibrant culture scene. In Johnstown, Altoona and State College, a mix of local arts, music and cuisine provides visitors with a taste of the region’s unique character. Visitors exploring these cultural hubs can enjoy charming shops and savor regional delicacies, as well as unique local festivals such as Johnstown Cambria City Ethnic Festival, the Italian Food & heritage Festival at DelGrosso Park and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, one of the top-ranked juried art fairs in the country, spanning Penn State’s campus and downtown State College. Penn State’s performing arts venues also bring Broadway touring productions, big-name music acts more to the area, including Bruce Springsteen, Elton John and many others.
