How to work and play in Altoona

Altoona, Pennsylvania, is not only a city steeped in rich history but also a burgeoning center for entrepreneurship. With a strong local economy, it offers an array of resources for startups and small businesses, and an endless array of arts, culture and outdoor fun for the city’s almost 45,000 residents to enjoy after work hours.
Altoona’s economy is diverse, anchored by healthcare, education and manufacturing sectors. Organizations like the Altoona-Blair County Development Corporation provide essential support, from funding opportunities to networking events.
The Altoona LaunchBox, which is supported by the Hite family’s $1 million donation, has assisted over 300 entrepreneurs with programs, advisors, co-working spaces and resources tailored to entrepreneurs, fostering collaboration and innovation.
Altoona’s mindset on coworking spaces is youthful and progressive. One particular company, Regus, has an array of day coworking, meeting rooms and dedicated desks for companies of any size to choose from. These vibrant spaces combine a modern atmosphere with essential amenities, providing entrepreneurs with the perfect environment to focus and network
Residents who work from home and are seeking a perfect workplace may migrate to the city’s local libraries, which offer quiet spots and free Wi-Fi. For other remote workers, diners and cafes like The Daily Grind Coffee Co., are great alternatives, where they can get a bite to eat.
What to do in Altoona when the work hours are over?
When it’s time to unwind, Altoona has plenty to offer. The Railroaders Memorial Museum gives a fascinating insight into the city’s rich railroading history, while DelGrosso’s Amusement Park, located only sixteen minutes from Altoona, provides family-friendly fun just a short drive away.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the Bald Eagle State Park near Altoona offers hiking and biking trails, perfect for recharging after a busy week. For a taste of local flavor, head to Pacifico Bakery for an array of amazing fresh bread or Marzoni’s Brick Oven & Brewery for delicious pizza and locally brewed craft beers.
Finding a work-life balance in Altoona is easy with its variety of recreational activities and social spots. After a productive day at work, residents can consider catching a show at the Mishler Theatre or enjoying live music at local venues like the ArtsAltoona Center.
While the town has shrunk since being the railroad capital of the country, the spirit, opportunities and community has not.
