The top 5 stories of 2022

 In Entrepreneurship

Every week, The Alleghenies features innovation and business news happening in Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon and Somerset Counties. Here are five of the most-clicked articles from 2022, along with a few reasons why they’re worth another read.

Grit and determination help launch Blair County’s Deadluck Manufacturing

“Deadluck” means to get out of a bad situation in the nick of time, and these two couples did exactly that, pivoting just before COVID to create their manufacturing company that does custom metalworking for other companies. “Our secret sauce is grit and determination,” they said.  “We want to be known for getting it right the first time.”

Johnstown-based Flood City Stitch is going viral – here’s why

Flood City Stitch went from a hobby learned from a childhood neighbor to a cult favorite in Johnstown. Owner Karlie Kendig’s creations sell out in minutes — and with help from Startup Alleghenies, she’s been able to leverage her passion project into a full time job. ““I don’t want to just sell things. I want to create keepsakes, and for my business to be a positive thing for Johnstown.”

Bringing wine expertise to Bedford County

Sommelier Todd Spitzer turned his expertise into a business with Cru Consulting. He creates wine-centered experiences with curated wine lists, hosted wine tastings and meals paired with exquisite vintages. ““Wine is universal. There has been more interest than I’d imagined from people I wouldn’t expect. Tourism in this area has really grown and having diverse options for out-of-town guests is a benefit for everyone.”

Huntingdon Co. Ag destination has entertaining attraction

Four Diamonds Ranch offers an interactive experience with farm life built around the appeal of its most popular residents: dwarf goats.“I really enjoy having people here. Come out and visit us. Shop our farm store for bath and body products and farm fresh eggs, then play with the goats!”

A Cambria County world record powerlifter just started her own business… at age 18

When competitive powerlifter Jamie Augustine couldn’t find the ideal gym where she could train, she decided to start one…. At age 18. Just out of high school, Augustine started Natural Fit, an all-female training space to help women reach fitness goals. (Fun fact: After her story was published, she was quickly contacted by WTAJ!) “Many women don’t feel comfortable in their own skin. My gym is all-female and class based. If you go to any other 24/7 gym, you don’t have that.”
