The Alleghenies’ vast natural spaces bring in tourism dollars

In the Alleghenies, visitors are continually drawn to the area surrounding Raystown Lake and Rothrock State Forest. This picturesque region invites visitors to explore its stunning landscapes, delve into its storied past and experience its vibrant local culture. Whether you’re an adventurer, history enthusiast or culture lover, the region has something special to offer.

These beautiful, natural landscapes in the Alleghenies have attracted millions of visitors per year, bringing a growing economic value to the region. In fact, Raystown Lake alone is estimated to have attracted over 2 million people to the region. It’s no surprise that visitors spend almost $186 million in the region each year.

Outdoor recreation added over $13 billion annually to Pennsylvania’s economy in 2021, accounting for almost 2% of the state’s gross domestic product — and in the Alleghenies, there’s no shortage of outdoor recreation.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the region around Raystown Lake is a playground of natural wonders. The crown jewel? Raystown Lake, the largest lake lying entirely within Pennsylvania. Spanning 8,300 acres, it’s a paradise for boating, fishing and swimming, with clear water and miles of unspoiled shorelines.

Designed by mountain bikers, the Allegrippis Trails at Raystown Lake provides the perfect opportunity for mountain biking, hiking, running or cross-country skiing in the winter. The 24-stacked loop trails provide endless options for adventure.

Just fifteen minutes away lies a massive state park, covering over 96,000 acres. With picturesque overlooks, such as the Standing Stone Trail, to rolling hills, and dense woodlands, Rothrock State Forest is a favorite spot for outdoor enthusiasts of all types. 

Meanwhile, those who are seeking striking rock formations, deep gorges and overlooks head over to Trough Creek State Park.

History and art only a short drive away

It’s not just outdoor adventure that bolsters this area’s economy, though. The region surrounding Raystown Lake also boasts a rich historical heritage, drawing in visitors from around the state. 

For example, Huntingdon is home to the Huntingdon County Historical Society Museum, which features exhibits on the county’s history, including its role in the Civil War and its development during the industrial era.

The Huntingdon Community Center hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including art exhibitions, theater performances and musical concerts. Local artists and performers frequently showcase their talents, providing visitors with a taste of the region’s creative spirit.

There’s also the Huntingdon County Fair, Pennsylvania’s second-largest agricultural event of the year. The beloved local event features agricultural exhibits, live entertainment and a range of family-friendly activities.

Whether you’re stopping in Boxer’s Cafe in Huntingdon or roasting s’mores over the campfire, there’s never a shortage of food options near Raystown Lake, to fuel your explorations. Don’t miss out on the local specialties and farm-to-table options that highlight the region’s agricultural heritage.
