Exploring business and tourism opportunities in Fulton County

 In Fulton County

By Jodie Dello Stritto

Fulton County offers a unique blend of business and tourism opportunities that make it an attractive destination for visitors and an appealing place to live and work. Nestled in the scenic Allegheny Mountains, this county is not only rich in natural beauty but also in potential for economic growth and development.

Business and industry

Fulton County’s business landscape is diverse, with an emphasis on small businesses, manufacturing and agriculture. Small businesses in particular are the backbone of Fulton County’s economy, and multiple resources exist to support them.

For example, the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism provides resources to local businesses, helping them thrive. From retail stores to professional services, the county’s business directory showcases a wide range of enterprises contributing to the local economy.

The Fulton Industrial Development Association (FIDA) also plays a crucial role in fostering economic growth. For over 30 years, FIDA has been dedicated to helping businesses in the county grow and succeed. The organization’s efforts have created a supportive environment for both established companies and new ventures.

Tourism opportunities

Tourism is another vital component of Fulton County’s economic landscape. The county’s natural attractions and historical sites draw visitors from near and far. One of the most popular destinations is Cowans Gap State Park, a 1,085-acre park featuring a 42-acre lake, hiking trails and camping facilities. The park offers year-round recreational activities, making it a favorite spot for outdoor enthusiasts.

Another notable attraction is the TOPP Trail (“The Old PA Pike”), an 8.5-mile abandoned section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, with two tunnels that have for decades attracted a cult following for their post-apocalyptic feel and graffiti, and that’s being converted to a public cycling and hiking trail. Offering a unique experience to traverse the former turnpike, the trail is a testament to the county’s rich transportation history.

Fulton County is also home to the Frontier Barn Quilt Trail, Pennsylvania’s largest barn quilt trail, featuring over 200 hand-painted quilt blocks. This trail not only celebrates the county’s agricultural heritage but also attracts tourists interested in art and history.

The Fulton County Historical Society Museum, located in the historic Fulton House in McConnellsburg, offers visitors a chance to explore the county’s past. The museum’s exhibits showcase the area’s history, from its early settlers to its role in the Civil War. This year will mark the 50th anniversary of Fulton County’s Fall Folk Festival, Oct. 18–20. A special celebration will be held Oct. 19 at 8:30 p.m. at the Fulton County Fairgrounds.

Fulton County’s rich natural assets and historical attractions like these both entice visitors and help support a strong sense of community pride.
