The Alleghenies’ recreation economy poised for growth

The beauty of the Alleghenies is playing a key role in bolstering the local economy. Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreation economy, valued at $17 billion statewide, is supported significantly by regions like the Alleghenies. This sector not only creates nearly 165,000 jobs but also drives substantial economic activity through tourism spending and outdoor recreation-related businesses.

The Alleghenies region under Visit PA list covers nine counties in Pennsylvania: Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Centre, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, and Somerset. This article and its statistics cover these six counties only: Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon and Somerset, which have been the traditional six counties covered by the Southern Alleghenies Planning & Development Commission (SAP&DC). The six counties listed above each offer unique opportunities for outdoor recreation within state parks and forests and other natural areas. Keeping these activities going, there are over 140 outdoor recreation-related retail and service businesses, such as bike shops and boat rentals; almost one hundred outdoor recreation provider businesses (campgrounds), and 46 outdoor recreation-related nonprofits. Outdoor related retail and service businesses, including gear retailers and bike shops, cater to both locals and visitors. Outdoor recreation providers such as campgrounds and outfitters thrive on the influx of tourists seeking adventure in the region’s scenic landscapes. Likewise, nonprofit organizations and local governments play pivotal roles in maintaining infrastructure, providing services, and supporting outdoor recreation initiatives, further contributing to the area’s economic vitality.

The Southern Alleghenies Planning and Development Commission (SAP&DC) is a non-profit economic and community development organization in the Alleghenies region. The SAP&DC focuses on human resource development, job creation, transportation infrastructure, residents’ quality of life, amongst other objectives. The SAP&DC offers free counseling to identify opportunities for business growth within the Alleghenies.
The outdoor recreation economy in the Alleghenies region rests on three main pillars today.
- The variety of public and private destinations – such as local trails, rivers, State Parks, ski areas, ATV parks, reservoirs, and campgrounds – offer diverse recreational experiences to both residents and visitors, drawing more attention to the region.
- The businesses that receive revenue from recreational activities and travel, including restaurants, overnight accommodations, and outdoor gear retailers. With the continual pour of interested tourists, these industries continue to benefit from the region’s natural attractions.
- The region’s communities and supporting organizations, including local and regional governments, non-profit groups, and volunteers, play a crucial role in providing essential infrastructure, services, and support for outdoor recreation experiences and businesses.
